HOUSING OF TEFILLIN - BATIM

There exists four basic types of housings for tefillin:
  1. Gassot
  2. Dakot
  3. Peshutim Mehudarot
  4. Peshutim


All Halachic authorities hold that the Gassot with the "Hut Hatefira," a sinew sewn separating each and every compartment of the shel rosh are kasher "Lechatchillah." - (to begin with). Most authorities also hold that the other types of housings are kasher "Bedieved." - after the fact. In addition, not all of our authorities agree that peshutim are kasher as they are not made of one piece of leather.
