![]() HOUSING OF TEFILLIN - BATIM Gassot Gassot are made by molding a single piece of thick leather from a large animal such as an ox or a cow. These are the very best, as they are the most durable and maintain their shape. Also, if something were to happen to them, they can in most cases be repaired. There are two basic types of Gassot in the market today, with the "Hut Hatefira" or without. The majority opinion of our Rabbis is that the ones without the "Hut Hatefira," a sinew sewn between the compartments of the "Shel Rosh" are only kasher bedieved. These batim usually last a lifetime. Dakot Dakot are made by covering a rigid base made of several pieces of leather with a single thin piece of skin from a smaller animal such as a goat or ram. These batim are very good, but also very delicate. They need to be treated with care. If worn down, in most cases, they cannot be repaired. Peshutim Mehudarot These are made by folding a single large piece of thin leather and then glueing the edges together to form the box. The bayit is then inserted and attached to a seperate peice that forms the base. The batim are light and attractive. Like the dakot, if something happens to them, they usually cannot be repaired. These are the simplest and least expensive tefillin batim which we supply. Peshutim These are made by gluing several pieces of parchment within a square box to form the inner walls of the head tefillin, dividing it into the four required compartments. If the inserts are glued incorrectly--a common problem, unfortunately--then these batim are not kosher for use. In addition, not all Halachic authorities agree that peshutim are kasher as they are not made of one single piece of leather. Peshutim Mehudarim do not present this problem. *Buyer Beware: the parchments inside commercially bought peshutim are generally of very poor quality, and often not kosher for use. | |
