![]() RETZUOT - THE BELTS Retzuot are the straps by which the Tefillin are put on. They, too, are made of the hide of an animal from a kosher species. It is preferable, however, to use straps made from the hide of a calf. It takes an average of 7 meters of leather to provide retzuot for a set of tefillin. In addition, they must be made Lishmah - for the sake of the sanctity of tefillin. Retzuot must have a minimum width of 11 millimeters at all points, however, other opinions permit a minimum width of 9mm. It is of utmost importance that the face of the straps be completely black. With use, they tend to lose their black color, especially at the points where they are flexed in fastening the tefillin to the upper arm and at the hand. When this happens, a Sofer can repaint them. Whoever blackens the straps must be careful to declare verbally "Leshem Kedushat Tefillin," conveying that this action is taken for the sanctification of Tefillin.
